Atlanta is the capital and the largest city of Georgia. It covers more than 6,000 square miles and has more than 110 municipalities. The village Terminus was chartered as Marthasville in 1843, renamed as Atlanta in 1845, and was reincorporated in 1847. Atlanta is located on the foothills of the southern Appalachians in the north-central part of the state. It is elevated at 1,010 feet above sea level and has mild climate throughout the year, with negligible snowfall. A snowstorm of about four inches occurs almost every five years, and this city also witnesses frequent tornado activity. The mild climate, physical beauty and the numerous job opportunities have made people from all over the country flock to this city. The metropolitan area residents in the year 2000 were 4,112,198 with a density of 3,161.2 people per square mile. During 1999, the per capita income was $25,772, the median household income was $34,770 and the number of total households was 168,341. The average hourly earnings of workers in manufacturing industries were $13.29 and the unemployment rate was 4.2%, as on December 2004.
